Food

So I was doing a lot of pregnancy research before we were officially "trying," because I wanted to be really prepared, and I figured, you only have 40 weeks DURING the pregnancy, so you should be as prepared as possible beforehand. (I had a similar approach to choosing baby names - this is a name the child is going to have for the rest of their LIFE, so you should make sure you take the time necessary to pick a good one, even if that means picking names before you are even trying to get pregnant... which I used to think was a little silly but it turns out to be what we did!).

Anyway, during my pre-pregnancy research, I saw a lot of information about foods you should avoid or limit. And luckily for me, it's like I was born to be pregnant! Or, at least, that I naturally don't eat most of the things you are supposed to avoid:
lunch/deli meats - I don't eat
raw/undercooked eggs - I actually prefer to overcook my eggs
fish with high mercury content - I don't eat any fish
caffeine - I do drink some tea, but cutting out/cutting back on caffeine has been easy. I do miss my occasional Pepsi (and I did have about 6 ounces of Pepsi when I was in Hawaii, but that's it), but for the most part, I've been good on really limiting my caffeine. I will still have an iced or hot black tea every now and then, but other than that, I am mostly sticking with herbal tea, juice, or water
unpasteurized cheeses - I'm sure I like some of these, but I rarely purchase/eat them
unpasteurized juices - can you even buy these anywhere?

The two things I do miss eating that I am supposed to avoid are hot dogs and bean/alfalfa sprouts. I don't eat either of those very often, but there have been a few times since getting pregnant that I could have had them... totally worth it to avoid, but I do miss them!

I can't help it

I like Doritos. Nacho cheese Doritos. I can't help it. I know they aren't good for me,  but they taste so delicious and cheesy! And I have always been a sucker for what I affectionately call "the crunch." I like to have something crunchy with just about every meal. It triggers my brain to feel like the meal is complete. And I'm that girl that puts potato chips (or aforementioned Doritos!) in her sandwich (on the rare occasion I actually have a sandwich with meat). I wouldn't say I'm a Doritoholic or anything; I've been known to go many months without having Doritos. But when I do indulge... I just really like Doritos.

Just thought you should know.

50th post!

I decided to wait until I’d been on the new job for a month before writing about it. No, that’s not really true, I have just been either too cold or too busy (or both) to just sit down and write about my life when I get home from work every day. I still talk about my life plenty, but writing about it is another matter. But I haven’t forgotten about you! About four times the past week or so, I start thinking to myself “ooh that would be a good blog starter.” And then I just never put it down on paper. Or computer screen. So I’ll just splat everything I can think of here in case it takes me another month to post!

1. This is my first post since last year when I was 25!
2. Why do French fries taste so good?
3. I eat my M&Ms by color when they are in a bowl. If I eat them straight from the bag I don’t really care. Of course, the color order is logical (to me), but for any illogical readers, I will list it here for you: brown, yellow, green, orange, red, blue. If you try it, you will see that after eating all the brown ones, the yellow ones stick out the most – naturally, they are the next to go. And so on, and so forth. Occasionally there is some variation on the order for the last three, but typically I go with the order stated above.
4. I also stir with a purpose. When I am trying to mix something (e.g. my oatmeal in the morning, or leftovers I am reheating in the microwave), I always try to stir so that the bottom middle is now on the outside top, and vice versa. I think this is the best way to disperse ingredients or heat evenly… but I also realize that most people probably just stick the spoon in and stir! I have tried not to care, but now that I have become accustomed to the evenness and equality of and within my food, I don’t know if I’ll ever really be able to “just stir.”
5. New job is great! There is definitely a lot to learn, but I think I’m doing well. The first couple of weeks I was just writing copious notes (I have about 9 pages of typed notes) and basically letting things go in one ear and out the other. I know that sounds kind of bad, but there was so much, it would have been way too crazy to try to absorb and understand it all the first couple of weeks, hence the copious note-taking. But after the first few weeks, things started to click, and I started remembering things (as opposed to having to always reference my notes, which I still do, of course). They said in my interview it will easily take a year before I’m really comfortable in the position and know most things, because some things only come up once or twice a year, and there’s just a lot to learn. BUT my trainer (who has been doing my job for umpteen years… -side note: umpteen did not get spellchecked! Who knew that was a Word-approved word??-) felt comfortable enough to leave me by myself for a day ALREADY (one month to the day of starting the position) and a couple of days ago when my desk was covered in papers, she came up to me and said, “You’re doing a good job.” Thanks! Also, about two weeks in, one of my interviewers (the one I was less sure about before, I think I referred to this person as Interviewer A) came down and was asking how I was doing, and I said “there’s a lot to learn” and she said, “You’ll get it sooner or later” and my trainer said, “I think it’ll be sooner. And that’s a statement of faith for me – I wouldn’t usually say that.” So that was also nice :) I am definitely glad I made the change.
6. We have been watching Lost. Before I started watching this with Adam I had never seen any episodes and didn’t know anything about it. But I like it! It is kind of frustrating because sometimes they do the stupidest things… and are you seriously going to tell me that they would just “give up” looking for the pregnant lady??? Of all the people on that island, the pregnant lady (Claire) and the little boy are the two that any sane, real, not-on-TV people would not just stop looking for. And since she came back and didn’t have any memory, I said to Adam, “Is that because the writers couldn’t think of what happened to her and why she was gone for so long, so they just decided to have her lose her memory?” And he said, “Probably.” No, we’re not cynical at all. :) I do like it, though. Adam only had the first two seasons, but we’ll probably buy at least a couple more. If they get too crazy, I won’t buy them all, but I’m willing to try another season or two.

Also, I'm sick. I miss breathing through my nose, and my toungue feels weird because I keep breathing through my mouth. And most things taste kind of funny. I had Adam try my orange juice last night to make sure it was good - I didn't want to be drinking expired orange juice on top of having a cold!

Ok, that's it for now. I'm sure I missed some things, but hopefully now I will get better about actually posting. Hope everyone had wonderful Christmases and New Year's and Groundhog's Days!!

Food, part one

This will be one of a series of weird food things about me. If you know me in person, you know that I’m… not super picky (I used to be really bad!), I just have passionate views about certain food items. I even write poems and quips about my preferences. With that introduction, I will talk today about fish and nuts.

I have never been a fan of fish. When I was little, the one time I remember having a babysitter that wasn’t a family member, said babysitter forced me to try tuna. I hated it. I wouldn’t say it traumatized me, because I have since tried fish, but that event certainly didn’t help my bias against fish. So, for some reason, I came up with a little poem about how I do NOT eat fish: If it swam in the sea, it’s not for me! It’s kind of catchy, if I do say so myself :-) And it does help people remember that I really don’t eat fish. I have tried blue gill (fresh caught by Adam and my mom), mahi mahi in Hawaii (which was not super fishy, but it DID have a macadamia nut coating on it – see below), garlic shrimp, and one homemade fish-and-potato-patty thing. I’m still not going to eat fish. The shrimp I tried had a weird, chewy texture to it (which I would assume applies to all shrimp). I also cannot stand the smell of shrimp cooking. It just permeates the whole house. Oh man, I better stop writing about fish. It’s making me feel queasy.
Another thing I don’t eat are nuts. I have tried them (including walnuts and pistachios) and while they don’t particularly have a bad flavor, I can’t tolerate the texture of nuts. They get stuck in my teeth and are just not something I want to eat. I eat peanut butter (creamy, of course), but I don’t eat nuts plain. I would probably be ok with almond butter, too. But I will never be one to put nuts in my cookies or brownies or anything else. And because just about everyone asks if I’m allergic to nuts because I avoid them so fervently, I created a little catch-phrase (not exactly a poem): “The only nuts I eat are donuts.” I sometimes say, “The only nuts I eat are donuts and corn nuts,” because I really DO love corn nuts! Probably more than donuts, even.
Anyway, that’s enough for the introduction to my many food preference oddities. We’ll save the rest for another day.

Grocery Store Adventures

Hello, my name’s Megan, and I am a grocery-store singer.

Let me clarify. I don’t schedule performances at grocery stores. I don’t set up a small stage in produce to belt my show tunes. But… I do tend to sing along when there’s a particularly catchy tune (and not always at the half-voice level you sing at sometimes so no one really hears you). The other day, I was cruising the aisles, and the Turtle’s “Happy Together” came on. What a great song! And I hadn’t heard it in a while, so I was really excited! I launched into grocery-store singer mode, not really self-consciously singing, per se, but just aware that people may notice my singing. I was walking and this tall guy who was probably a few years younger than me was coming towards me. When we got closer, I thought, “He’s going to hear me singing now.” As our carts began to cross paths, I realized that he was singing, too!!! That was so awesome. I’m not alone! A minute later, while the same song was on, during the “ba ba-ba-ba ba’s,” a young father with his daughter was singing, too! Aside from the Tiki Room, this is as close as my life has gotten to being a musical, where everyone spontaneously sings the same song and knows all the choreography.

On a completely unrelated note, I tried the whole wheat linguini at Olive Garden and I liked it! I would have to say I still probably prefer the normal pasta, but I was a little afraid I wouldn’t even like the whole wheat option. This is a good thing, I think. I’ve been holding out on switching over to whole wheat options (the Japanese eat white rice and have one of the lowest national levels of obesity!), but… I’m considering it more and more. I’ve been having oatmeal for breakfast every day for the past couple of weeks and I have noticed that I feel fuller when lunch comes around. It sticks with me more than my normal breakfast of garlic sourdough toast, that’s for sure!

Well I think I’ll wrap up there for today… and happy reading! (my blog or whatever else it is you’re reading)
